Cube 3 Automatically Load Filament (for Extruder Hub)

Post by MajorOCD » Fri May 11, 2018 12:29 am

I came up with a way to load the filament with a print file.

Just copy the .cube3 files (4 of them) to a USB flash drive, plug into the printer, and print from the menu. When it pauses, insert the filament into the hub, hit resume and wait for it to start feeding. It will feed the filament to the print head and prime / purge the print head.

I included the .bfb files in case you need to make adjustments.
This is what "Load_Filament_PLA_Left.bfb" looks like:
PrintFile.jpg
This is designed to work with a 500 mm tube, but you can adjust it for different lengths.
Line 17 is the one to adjust to make it feed more or less. M551 is for the left extruder and M552 is for the right. P is the amount to extrude and S is the speed.
You will notice that 2 other lines have M551. Line 15 is to load slowly past the extruder so it doesn't jam. Line 17 is to load faster to the hotend. And line 22 is to purge the hotend. You should only need to adjust line 17.

I haven't tried this yet but I think will find it very useful. Is there any way however to have the printer retract the same amount of filament after heating up and before pausing? I was thinking it would be useful for me to change filaments since right now I purge to heat the nozzle, then manually remove the hub and back out the loaded filament, then manually reload - all hopefully before it starts to prime.

I'm assuming you are referring to having it unload the filament for you? If so, there are 2 problems with this. First, I could never get it to reverse the filament. I'm not sure why but I tried everything I could think of, including retraction. The firmware on this printer can be a bit flaky at times. Second, if you back the filament out of the head without cutting the melted bulb off, it will get stuck in the bowden tube.

This is how I manually unload the filament. I never take the hub off. I cut the filament just below the hub and then set it to purge. As soon as it starts oozing from the nozzle, I disconnect the tube from the quick connect at the print head and pull it all the way out (pulling the filament out of the nozzle). Be careful you don't let the filament hit the fan! I let it finish the purge which will drive the filament out of the hub. After it says cooling down, you can pull the filament all the way out from the top. Then put the tube back in the fitting.

Some people might think this is a waste of filament but I don't like reusing the filament with teeth marks in it. It can be problematic.

Hello everyone,

I am a new member here. I did print out the Hub and do use it now.
Would be nice if MajorOCD can share the stls so I can modify some parts.

I am also testing stuff and did find out how to do a UNLOAD of the filament for changing the spool.
If doing this correctly / with enough speed the filament will not get a melted bulb..
When I am finished testing I will upload the UNLOAD_bfb / cube3 files here.

I don't understand what you mean. All the STLs are on Thingiverse. There is a link in the post for it.

I would be very interested in seeing the bfb file for this.

Oh you are right. I am sorry for being so blind:)

This is my UNLOAD filament file.
The S Command is for the retraction length. there has to be a extrude command M551 first else the retraction wont work. Also this will not work if no heating command M104 or M103 (Turn extruder off and do retraction) is used.

Please test:) Somehow I can not attach the files. Please see the code below.

Did you test it yourself? I don't have a Cube 3 anymore. I sold it to Mechanizer. Maybe he can test it for you.

I'm using a Prusa i3 MK2.5 now.
